LAKENHEATH, England — Dr. Jason Ter Horst, superintendent for the Department of Defense Education Activity (DoDEA) Europe West District, announced the selection of Mr. Steven Smith as the new principal of Lakenheath Middle School.

With over a decade of experience in DoDEA and more than 25 years in education, Smith brings a diverse and student-focused leadership style to the Lakenheath Middle School community. He most recently served on the leadership team at Brussels Elementary High School and has served in both the DoDEA Europe East and West districts since 2011.

“I’m excited to join the Lakenheath Middle School team and continue building on the school’s commitment to rigorous, relevant, and engaging academic experiences,” Smith said. “I believe that teamwork, strong community partnerships, student-centered learning, and open communication are the keys to helping every student and educator thrive.”

Before joining DoDEA, Smith taught at both the middle and high school levels in the Los Angeles Unified School District for 12 years, where he led courses including AP Computer Science, English Language Arts, Social Studies, Math, and JROTC. His roles have also included literacy coach, testing coordinator, and lead teacher. Prior to his work in education, he served nearly 12 years in the United States Air Force as an instructor and in-flight refueling boom operator.

Smith holds a Bachelor of Science in Computer Studies from the University of Maryland in Tokyo, Japan, as well as a master’s degree in Educational Administration, Leadership, and Policy Studies from California State University campuses in Bakersfield and Northridge. He also holds a California teaching credential.

“Mr. Smith brings an important combination of military service, classroom excellence, and educational leadership,” Ter Horst said. “His passion for service, experience in diverse schools, and dedication to student success make him a great fit for the Lakenheath Middle School community.”

Outside of school, Smith and his wife, Veronica—also a longtime DoDEA educator—enjoy family time, traveling, cooking, and exploring new places. They have two children: a daughter working in the dance and theater industry in New York City, and a son studying communications and entrepreneurship at the University of Colorado.
