Leading with heart in the tri-base community: How Lakenheath Middle School NJHS is making an impact

Across DoWEA schools, students are known for their resilience, leadership, and unique perspective on service. This semester, the National Junior Honor Society (NJHS) chapter at Lakenheath Middle School proved exactly why.

Comprised of dedicated student leaders from the 6th, 7th, and 8th grades, this dynamic group represents families across RAF Mildenhall, RAF Lakenheath, and RAF Feltwell, and they have spent the year putting the core pillars of NJHS — scholarship, leadership, service, character, and citizenship — into massive action across the tri-base area.

From environmental stewardship to supporting military families and mentoring younger peers, these middle schoolers have shown an inspiring commitment to giving back to the community that supports them.

Base Stewardship at RAF Lakenheath

Our middle school members took to the grounds of RAF Lakenheath for a large-scale base trash cleanup. Armed with garbage bags and a lot of community pride, these 6th, 7th, and 8th graders braved the elements to ensure our shared installation spaces stay clean, safe, and welcoming for all service members and their families.

Supporting Military Families at Swanky Seconds

If you’ve stopped by the Swanky Seconds thrift shop on RAFL recently, you’ve likely spotted these energetic volunteers hard at work. Students have dedicated their weekends and after-school hours to sorting donations, organizing inventory, and assisting patrons. Their efforts directly support a vital community resource that pours back into tri-base families.

Mentoring Future Leaders at Feltwell Elementary

True leaders lift others as they climb, and that’s exactly what these NJHS students are doing at Feltwell Elementary School. Whether they are tutoring, reading one-on-one with younger peers, helping teachers manage classrooms, or volunteering at elementary school events, these middle schoolers have become beloved role models to the next generation of DoWEA students.

Closer to home, whenever school doors open for an event, the NJHS chapter answers the call. From welcoming families to managing logistics for community nights, these students are consistently the first to arrive and the last to leave, ensuring their school community thrives. Our members are the driving force behind the scenes — whether they are creating promotional posters, designing vibrant decor for Career Day, setting up for school dances and Fine Arts Night, or spreading joy down the hallways by delivering PTO candygrams to their peers.
